Warning signs with BMW dashboard may vary in some models but are mostly the same, and the signs are very close to each other. The warning lights with the BMW display panel light up and go off for a few seconds when you bring the ignition key to the first stage.
If the lamps that are illuminated in red do not go out after the vehicle has started working, this indicates that there is a malfunction in your vehicle and it is recommended that you do not use your vehicle. The warning lights with the BMW dash panel are coded with colors to distinguish the levels of importance.
The colors are green, blue, yellow, orange and red. The red warning lights on the display panel are associated as a danger signal. For this reason, there is a very serious situation when the red light is on. You must stop and check your vehicle safely. The most important warning lamps are the low engine oil warning lamp and the coolant warning lamp, which are illuminated in red.
If you continue driving while either of these lamps is lit, there may be engine malfunctions that will cause significant financial damage to your vehicle. The orange and yellow warning lights are not critical for safety, but it means that something is wrong and should be resolved as soon as possible.
An example of this, it is the Diesel Particulate Filter warning light or engine malfunction light. The green or blue warning lamps illuminate to indicate that your vehicle has any technological features enabled. For example, if the headlights are turned on. When you lower the signal arm, the left turn indicates the saga turn when you lift it up. This warning lamp lights up when there is a dead battery, a battery fault, a charging dynamo alternator malfunction.
It indicates that there is no charge of the battery. If the battery lamp is on while the engine is running, there is a problem.
Indicates a faulty exterior lamp. Overdrive means that the drive system is off. Check all the lights. This symbol may also indicate a traction control or a communication problem between the modules. Burning the fuel warning indicator means that the engine is overheated. You should stop the car immediately and wait for the engine to cool when the warning light flashes.Enter your email address below and instructions to reset your password will be emailed to you. Fault Code Readers and Diagnostic Scanners put the power of the dealership in your hands. It's alerting you to a potential problem and a fault code has been stored in the car's internal diagnostic system.5 Things that will BREAK on your BMW
You can take the car to the dealer and have the code pulled for you for a one-time fee or you can buy one of these code readers and check the trouble code yourself and any other code that may come up in the future. These diagnostic tools pay for themselves.
They are a must for the DIYer or any mechanic. These tools can read and reset trouble codes and reset your maintenance interval settings. A separate tool can also be used to reset the SRS system separate from the engine diagnostic system. Peake Reset Tools come with a booklet containing instructions and a list of codes. The E61 wagon followed shortly there after. View My Garage. I have heard of an automatic transmission reset procedure that goes something like the following: Turn on the car such that all the accessory lights are on but the motor is not running, depress the gas pedal all the way to the floor, keep the pedal there for 30 seconds and the transmission will reset to the original factory settings it will "unlearn" the adaptive settings.
My BMW Service Manager who has been very knowledgeable and honest on service matters says he never heard of this procedure, it's not in the BMW service manuals or technical bulletins, nor have his fellow mechanics heard of it.
Can any of you confirm if the adaptive auto transmission "soft reset" procedure exists? Please pass on where I can find the procedure for my with comfort access if it exists. Is the procedure in the owners manual I can't find it in minedescribed in a technical bulletin, or described in any other BMW literature? Remove Advertisements.
I don't know where it's located in the manual if it isbut I know it works. My wife noticed a drastic improvement. It worked on my '08 Here is how you do it: 1. Put key in the ignition 2. Click on the Start button without having your foot on the accelerator. At this point the lights on the dash will all light up. Push the accelerator to the floor and hold it for about 30 seconds. For me at about 20 seconds I heard a very faint sound.
BMW Service Reset Tools & Fault Code Readers
This is the reset sound. Don't worry if you don't hear it. Just keep your foot on the pedal for about 30 seconds. That's it. Now start the car and test it out.
For me the acceleration from a stand still was much improved. I now don't feel like I need to drive in DS mode all the time. Let me know if this works for you. Thank you so much! Much better I'm new to BMW and I've been having similar issues with acceleration from a stop and was thinking I was just going to have to get used to it. Hi guys, is there a permanent solution for this issue?
It worked for me but lasted for a week or so. Does that indicate a serious problem in the transmission or this is the way it is with BMW. Elhaekmir, The only permanent solution is to replace the mechantronic unit or your entire transmission.
It is actually cheaper to get a new transmission as the mechatronic unit is the same price as the transmission. The reason the reset only last for about a week or so is that the unit is still malfunctioning and then once the vehicle completes the drive cycle then it will revert back to the original condition.
Thanks PoeticJustice72, I'm trying to convince the dealer to fix it, I took it three times so far, all they did is update the software, it worked for few days or so.2019 me aane wali vacancy mp
Since the car is not throwing any codes, they keep telling me it's fine. I'm gonna keep bringing it in until they fix it. I'm sure couple month down the rd when my warranty is up they'll tell me that the tranny needs to be replaced. I'm also planning on filing a claim with the DMV, just in case.I will also give you some tips on diagnosing transmission faults, mechanical and electrical.
The diagnostic steps used in this article to verify a faulty transmission ECU are advanced, however you can learn a lot from the process and help answer your questions when this problem arises for you.
Remember when working with electronic control modules, always disconnect the battery before unplugging or plugging one in and do not expose them to static electricity. The automatic transmission in BMW E39 models is electronically controlled and is able to adapt fluid pressure and shift points over times as parts wear. The ability to adapt shift points depending on pressure and slip extends the lifetime of your transmission. What this means for you if you have a FAIL SAFE message indicating the transmission has entered the emergency program is that the trans ECU has been adapting the transmission to maintain a normal feel up to the point where it could no longer adapt and reached a fault limit.
The pressure regulation solenoid is de-energized resulting in maximum line pressure. The torque converter clutch is de-activated. The reverse lockout function is cancelled. Shift lock solenoid is de-energized. The message location or indicator varies depending upon model, year and cluster type.
High version instrument cluster will display a message in the driver information display. Vehicles with low version clusters will display a fault symbol in the cluster. During failsafe mode the transmission will be shifted into a higher gear to allow the vehicle to be driven to a shop.
Depending upon application, the transmission will shift into 3rd or 4th gear on a four speed, and 4th or 5th gear on a five speed. For example the A5SR transmission will go into 5th gear when there is a mechanical malfunction and 4th when there is a power failure to the TCM, this is a key note to remember when diagnosing. Since pressure regulation ceases, the shift to failsafe mode will be abrupt or harsh, unless the transmission is already in the failsafe gear.
The check engine light will also be illuminated by the DME. See our article on how to read DME fault codes. If you receive a fault code for transmission slip or gear ratio, your problem is likely that the transmission has reached it adaptation limit. Start by checking the fluid level and condition. If your transmission was shifting harsh before the fault, it could be worn out, for example worn clutches or hard seals. Always check that your shift linkage is properly adjusted before condemning your transmission.
Shift quality issues consist of harsh up or down shifts, improper shift points and erratic shifting. As with most concerns, check the transmission fluid level and condition as well. Before digging too deep on delayed upshift issues, make sure you consider when this occurs.
It could be normal operation, such as the warm-up phase program. Always check front tires for proper inflation pressures, correct size and matching brand and model. Also check for uneven tire wear. Variations in front tire size from left to right can activate the curve recognition feature. The TCM will interpret the difference in wheel speed signals as being a turn and suppress or delay upshifts.
Slipping is usually associated with a fault code.John is a fervent writer, gamer, and guitar lover. Former automatic-transmission repairer, current welder and hobbyist game developer. But what is it?Formio select component filter
Failsafe Prog" warning, and look into the possible reasons you might be experiencing it. Failsafe mode can come with a number of different labels such as. The most typical manifestation of a transmission in failsafe mode other than the dashboard warning is the transmission being locked into one forward gear, unable to change shift either automatically or manually.
The actual gear it will stay in varies from transmission to transmission, but it tends to be second or third gear.
Failsafe mode can also be displayed in a number of ways across different vehicles. Some older vehicles give no obvious sign at all, leaving the driver to guess from the fact that the vehicle is no longer changing gear. The idea is to allow you to get your vehicle home or to a repair shop so that it can be repaired whilst also minimising any damage caused by the fault. It is intended to be a purely temporary measure to save you the inconvenience of being stranded when a transmission fault develops, but you would find it hard going to drive for any significant length of time or distance in failsafe mode.
As mentioned above, the point of failsafe mode is to allow you to drive your vehicle to a place it can be repaired, or stored until repair can be undertaken. In reality, however, you should gauge your situation carefully. If your vehicle has locked into a lower gear—such as first or second—then your speed will be limited as attempting to drive too fast will result in the engine over-revving.Piano blue book
It should go without saying that driving a regular car with the rev counter in red for any significant length of time is not advisable. An automatic vehicle should be capable of setting off in third gear, however every time you do, you degrade the internal clutch plates of the transmission at a much greater rate than during regular driving.
With this in mind, you should first try determine whether or not your vehicle has defaulted to a higher or lower gear. If you were hoping to drive home but home is a long drive away, consider finding a more local repair shop and taking the vehicle there. Conversely, if your car is stuck in a higher gear, avoid routes that will involve a lot of stopping and starting such as busy town centresputting undue stress on the clutches. Wearing the clutches down like this for too long can result in them breaking down and essentially clogging the transmission up, resulting in a loss of drive at best, and a large bill for a complete transmission overhaul at worst.
This is a tricky question to answer. The "Trans. For the sake of brevity, we will count any faults within the transmission itself as one thing. If you want to learn more about automatic transmission failures, check out this article on troubleshooting automatic transmission problemsbut for this article, the transmission is a single component.
Aside from the transmission itself, there are many components that can cause a vehicle to decide to go into "Trans. This data includes obvious places such as the vehicle speed sensors and the gear shifter position, as well as less obvious components such as air flow pressure and inclination. If any of these readings are inconsistent or missing, it could cause the transmission to go into limp mode. Another more insidious cause is that of failing electronics. Things like faults in the instrument cluster where your warning lights and speedometer isblown fuses, and even a failure in the transmission control module the computer that controls the transmission itself can all cause "Trans.
Try turning the engine on and off to see if you get regular drive for a time, but if that works, do not assume the problem is gone for good, because it almost certainly isn't. Then take it from there.Guyver 2 f

I don't know what to think really??? I got bmw x5 and i had the same problem when im drive from hill. Used fo istop start up car again and it gone. But today when i drive from hill i stop to start again car, but fault still on screen and i can drive just in one gear.Credit goes to : BMW Logic7 site. All highlighted problems you can experience even on low miles cars less than k, it depends on at what speeds your car mostly runs.
On the highway this transmission will easily last k miles. In fact ZF 6HP21 is a very good transmission, powerful, bullet proof pretty much if serviced in time and proper fluid pressure maintained! This transmission is still considered one of the best and has carbon clutches vs cheap paper ones you can find on Japanese cars.
But this transmission has very serious and very important weak spots you have to take care of:. If it is higher than 95C, then most likely you have a problem with transmission cooling system or your engine cooling has some leaks causing running it very hot. It is very important to keep temps in specs not only because of few degrees, but because with leaking cooling system lose coolant pressure introducing air in the system, causing uneven cooling and overheating both engine and transmission.
Good OEM specs are cycle when idling and lower hose should be hot around C. When you drive it tstat is controlled by ECU therefore it keeps it cool on the freeway. So if engine temps are good and transmission still runs hotit means heat exchanger is clogged with transmission clutches, Torque Convertor wear and tear dirt. Replace it and check if it got better. This transmission will die quick if temps are not good. This adapter number 2 usually lasts only k miles. Replace it every 60k miles even if transmission shifts well.
It is very important because it keeps your mechatronic valve body under specified pressure therefore it controls how clutches are pressed! Which means if your gasket is weak your transmission clutches are not pressing well on each other causing premature wear and tear, also transmission pump and TC clutch will be affected.
This square seal also can crack, in this case you will get transmission fail safe errors and even clutches slipping errors, causing very quick transmission death. Yes they go bad and are not simple solenoids you used to know from old school transmissions.
So if your transmission temps are good and your transmission shifts hard, it could be your solenoids. Its good idea to replace them every k, because they control everything in the transmission. You will be surprised how transmission shifts with new solenoids. You can see that in the parts catalog:. Protection Foam Strip: ZF: A video I made to replace the solenoids:.
Yes due to leaking oil pan gasket you might loose some fluid. Always check transmission oil pan for leaks and transmission fluid level use BMW sealed transmission fluid level check procedure.
Yes it can go bad just like any clutch, because this transmission engages this clutch very early causing premature wear and tear. In other words it is more like a manual transmission with torque converter working only at very low speeds and low rpm. So I would NOT recommend driving it very aggressively in the city, unless you enjoy paying k for a new transmission.
Driving in normal mode, Torque converter can last up to k miles!! Without TC clutch your car is still drive-able, but you can feel its very weak even though engine feels strong.
Its a long list of issues, but if you take care of your transmission every k miles it pays for itself pretty good.Networkx stats
Most important thing for this transmission is correct fluid pressure and temps, other parts like clutches are very durable and made with highest quality standard. This transmission is way more reliable than Mercedes one or Lexus transmissions.
Hi, I have the same mechatronic as you in the video but you ordered different colour solenoids. In your valve body you have 8 solenoids but you ordered 7 only. Can you advice which one you actually ordered and from where? Hello, The post is very helpful understanding the transmission.Automatic transmissions are fickle beasts which can be astronomically expensive if not maintained. Throw in the fact that it's a BMWand the need for regular maintenance becomes quite clear.
Unfortunately, a fluid and filter change is not as easy as it used to be. When parts are replaced in a transmission or the fluid is changed, resetting the transmission's adaptations may become necessary to restore shift quality.
The ZF 6-speed automatic used in many Ebased vehicles like the i, X1, and i among others is an expensive transmission, and fluid replacement with an adaptation reset can be a great way to extend its life. Warning: If you have the capability of resetting transmission adaptations with INPA, I urge you not to do it unless you have the time and roadways to complete the relearn process exactly as described. This procedure will cause the transmission to shift poorly at a detriment to the gearbox if the relearn is not performed immediately and properly.
It is better to change the fluid and NOT reset adaptations, than to reset them and not perform the proper relearn procedure. Simply put, INPA is a piece of software that allows deeper access into your BMW's modules for enhanced maintenance and repair capabilities.
We won't be coding any modules or doing intensive flashing, so even a budget cable is likely to work. We don't sell these on our site, but you can get them on Amazon. As of this post's publish date, the following link is a helpful package for procuring this software, which includes details instructions on how to install it:.
The e90post. Turn the vehicle's ignition on but do not start the car by pressing the start button twice.
Now, execute INPA. When INPA is loaded, the battery and ignition bubbles should be filled in to indicate it has established communication with the vehicle.
After pressing F3, the software should confirm the adaptations are reset and you can begin the process of relearning. The most important part of resetting transmission adaptations is the re-learn process. Refer to the chart below to see which re-learn procedure your vehicle needs after its transmission adaptations are reset. Your vehicle's build date will be on the sticker in the driver's door jamb. A failing steering rack in your E9X or E8X can significantly affect the driving feel and performance, You shouldn't need to replace the steering rack of your BMW E90 for the lifetime of the car.
However, lack of maintenance to the system can cause damage over time requiring full replacement to BMW doesn't recommend replacing fluids other than oil and brake fluid as they have an unfortunate "lifetime fluid" recommendation.
